What to know before renting a surfboard in Morocco

Morocco’s Atlantic surf coast — Taghazout, Tamraght, and Agadir — has a well-established rental scene built around tourism and a passionate local surf community. Quality varies between shops, but the best providers offer well-maintained boards, correct sizing advice, and flexible rental periods.

The key difference between a good and a bad rental experience comes down to three things: the condition of the equipment, whether the shop matches you to the right board for your level, and whether delivery or flexible pickup is available. This is exactly what we check when we vet every shop in our network.

🏄 Which board should I rent?

If you’ve never surfed, or only have a handful of sessions under your belt, always start on a soft-top. They’re safer, more stable, and you’ll catch far more waves. Many people jump to a shortboard too early and end up frustrated. Trust the process — progression is quicker when you match the board to your actual level.

Do you need a wetsuit?

Morocco’s Atlantic water is warmer than most people expect, but it varies significantly by season. In summer (June–September) water temperatures reach 20–22°C — a shorty or spring suit is comfortable. In winter (December–February), temperatures drop to 15–17°C and a 3/2mm or 4/3mm full wetsuit is essential.

Most rental shops include wetsuit options as an add-on. We always confirm wetsuit availability and sizing before matching you with a shop, so you’re not stuck on arrival.

Pickup vs. delivery — which is better?

Most shops in Taghazout and Tamraght offer both pickup from the shop and delivery to your accommodation. If you’re staying close to the surf zone, pickup is easy and takes 5 minutes. If you’re based further south in Agadir, delivery can save significant time and hassle, especially if you have multiple boards or travelling with family.

Delivery fees vary — some shops offer free delivery within a certain radius, others charge a small flat fee. We clarify this in advance so there are no surprises.

💡 Pro tip: inspect before you paddle out

Always check the board for existing dings, cracks, or fin damage before taking it. Report anything to the shop so you’re not held responsible for pre-existing damage when you return it. Good shops will already have photographed the board — if yours doesn’t, photograph it yourself.

Daily vs. weekly rental — what saves money?

Single-day rentals are convenient for testing the water, but multi-day and weekly rates offer significantly better value. Most shops offer 20–30% discounts on 5–7 day rentals compared to booking day by day. If you’re planning more than two surf sessions, a weekly rate is almost always the smarter choice.

We negotiate the best available rate for you when we make the introduction — local relationships matter, and our partners know we send serious surfers, not one-session tourists.

What about deposit and insurance?

Most Moroccan rental shops require a passport or ID deposit rather than a cash deposit, though some ask for a small refundable security amount (typically €20–50 depending on board value). Standard rentals do not include insurance, so be careful and ask about the shop’s damage policy before signing anything.

We always brief you on the deposit and damage policy of each shop we match you with, so you walk in prepared.

Everything about surf rentals in Morocco

Answers to the questions we hear most often before people book.

During summer (June–August) and popular holiday periods, good rental shops can run low on soft-tops and full-wetsuit stock. Booking 1–2 weeks ahead is recommended. In shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October) you can usually arrange a rental 2–3 days ahead. Winter rarely requires advance booking.
Yes — most shops in Taghazout and Tamraght offer delivery. Delivery within the immediate surf zone is often free or included. For Agadir-based accommodation, a small delivery fee typically applies. We clarify delivery terms with each shop before making the introduction.
Always a soft-top for your first sessions — and for most people, the first few days. They’re wider, more stable, and foam-constructed so they don’t hurt when they hit you (which they will). A 7–8ft soft-top will help you catch more waves and stand up faster than jumping on a shortboard. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise too early.
It depends on the season. Summer (June–September): 20–22°C water, boardshorts or a shorty/spring suit is fine. Spring and autumn (April–May, October): 17–19°C, a 2/2mm or 3/2mm suit is comfortable. Winter (November–March): 15–17°C, a 3/2mm or 4/3mm full wetsuit is essential for extended sessions.
Most shops ask for a passport or ID to hold as deposit. Some may ask for a small refundable cash deposit (typically €20–50 depending on board value). We always brief you on the specific shop’s deposit policy before you go, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
Damage policies vary by shop. Minor surface scratches are generally not charged, but dings, cracks, or fin damage typically incur repair costs. Always inspect the board and photograph existing damage before leaving the shop. Standard rentals don’t include insurance — ask about the shop’s damage assessment process upfront.
Absolutely. Board rental and surf lessons are separate services. We can arrange both independently or in combination — many visitors take a few lessons first, then rent independently once they’re comfortable in the water. Tell us in the form what you’re looking for and we’ll give you the best recommendation.
Yes, completely. We don’t charge booking fees or add a margin to rental prices. We work with local shops as trusted referral partners — they get quality customers, you get a vetted rental without the research. You pay the shop directly at the standard rate.
